The collection exhibit presents works of art by professional regional artists. Community Mosaic Project

Celebrating its 15th year, the Community Mosaic Project brings awareness of the visual arts by reaching out to the local community and encouraging participation from individuals of all ages and abilities and providing the Hardy with funds through the sale of miniature artworks. The Project is displayed during the months of July and August annually, in conjunction with the Collection Invitational exhibit, and consists, on average, of 300 6-inch by 6-inch works of art that collectively create a large-scale mosaic. This year 312 canvases were submitted for the project. All canvases are donated by the Artists Guild, LLC in Sturgeon Bay, WI. Focus on Five: Printmakers from the Vox Populi Print Collective

September 3 - October 9

Focus on Five, is a print show curated by Christine Style. This show explored a deeper view of prints by five artists from “The Devil’s Dictionary” Vox Populi printmaking exchange project. Exhibiting artists included Barry Roal Carlsen, Mary Hood, Rachael Griffin, Andy Rubin, and Jayne Reid Jackson.

Inspired by “The Devil’s Dictionary” print exchange, Christine Style who is Professor Emeritus of Art & Design at UW-Green Bay, selected five artists who work in a variety of printmaking techniques, including lithography, screen printing, mezzotint, photogravure, and monotype for this exhibition.

In addition, the entire portfolio from “The Devil’s Dictionary” was on view, which included 28 artists who were randomly assigned a letter or symbol and then chose a word that resonated with them on some level, inspired by the work of American Civil War soldier, journalist, and writer, Ambrose Bierce.

Bierce's witty and satirical glossaries of words appeared in newspapers and publications around the turn of the 20th century. The writings were gathered into books, first as The Cynic's Word Book in 1906 and then in a more complete version titled The Devil's Dictionary in 1911.

Contemporary Landscape: Colorist, Formalist, Tonalist

September 4 - October 10

Cotemporary Landscape: Colorist, Formalist, Tonalist brought together the paintings and drawings of three artists - Rodger Bechtold (Illinois/Wisconsin), Paula Swaydan-Grebel (Wisconsin), and Brian Sindler (Illinois) - whose methods and aesthetic approach to the contemporary landscape are influenced by colorist, formalist, and tonalist practices. This exhibit presented a rich survey of three distinguished painters curated by representational painter Craig Blietz.

Surfaces: Large-Scale Contemporary Abstract Painting included five Midwest artists who approach abstract painting through a variety of different methods. Featuring a selection of cross-generational artists who reference present-day materials sampled from the Internet, popular culture, nature, and technology to make their large-scale works. Making Marks, Making Meaning

September 1st - October 15th

Making Marks, Making Meaning featured 28 local, regional, and nationally recognized and accomplished visual artists and design professionals. The vision for this exhibit included work that involved one or more of these ideas: investigates, studies, and questions the visible world, records objects and events, communicates thoughts and ideas, transcript from memory—a way of collecting and keeping impressions and ideas; a way of making visible the world of our imagination, technical drawing as a design tool for industrial applications. This exhibit included works that examined all forms of drawing, from all types of artists, designers, and professional drafters who use drawing to convey their ideas.

Form Follows Function: The Intersection of Art and Craft

September 2nd -October 9

Form Follows Function: The Intersection of Art & Craft focused on the principles associated with the Bauhaus School of Art which promoted simplicity of form based on functionality. This exhibit featured 34 artists and craftspersons from Door County and throughout Wisconsin whose work challenged the traditional distinction between fine art and craft; work created in media traditionally associated as “crafts”, including woodworking, textiles, ceramics, art metal/jewelry, papermaking/topography/bookmaking, and other media that reflect the Bauhaus philosophy.

A weeklong exhibition featuring all artwork submitted for the 53rd Annual Juried Exhibit prior to the jury selection. This year 111 artworks were submitted for jurying with 60 works included in this exhibit. The collection exhibit presents works of art by professional regional artists. Community Mosaic Project

Now in it's 8th year, the Community Mosaic Project brings awareness of the visual arts by reaching out to the local community and encouraging participation from individuals of all ages and abilities, and to provide the Hardy with funds through the sale of miniature artworks. The Project is displayed during the months of July and August annually, in conjunction with the Collection Invitational exhibit and consists, on average, of 300 6-inch by 6-inch works of art that collectively create a large-scale mosaic. This year 272 canvases were submitted for the project, which raised more than $8000 for the Hardy Gallery! All canvases are donated by the Artists Guild, LLC in Sturgeon Bay, WI. Please thank them for their patronage and continued involvement with this project. Without their support none of this would be possible.

Exquisite Corpse: Head to Toe & End to End

September 2nd -October 9

The Exquisite Corpse: Head to Toe and End to End included printmaking, works on paper, and creative writing. Participants were asked to make work based on the surrealist concept known as The Exquisite Corpse—a "blind collaboration," where components of what will become a larger work are produced separately by participants, without being able to see what others have produced before being displayed together. Printmakers from Door County and around the state produced sections of the human body to make "corpses" organized by artist Christine Style. In addition, visual 2D artists from Door County made work for End-to-End, a work made up of 23 individual works, connected together as one large seamless work, and local poets from Write on Door County collaborated to make a series of poetry.

This exhibition has been organized to draw attention to the rapidly evolving world of photography. The exhibit will explore and contrast contemporary photographic processes, including traditional, digital and alternative methods, while also revealing the technical aspects leading to the creation of the work though written texts. Unlike most Francis Hardy Gallery exhibitions, in which a wide variety of media is displayed, this exhibit will concentrate exclusively works with photographic origins.

At the conclusion of the exhibit, each original work is packaged and sent off to the patron who chose the respective canvas's number - thus increasing the impact of the project and making original artwork affordable for all.

Community Mosaic Project

Part community outreach project and part fundraiser, the Community Mosaic Project was developed in 2007 and launched in the summer of 2008 as a means to raise awareness of the arts and make them accessible for every member of our community. The display was hung in tandem with our Collection Invitational Exhibit and consisted of a large-scale mosaic (approx. 12 feet by 6 feet), constructed of 300-plus 6-inch by 6-inch canvases.

Each artwork was crafted by community members, youth, professional, and amateur artists of all skill levels and ages. There were no requirements for subject matter or medium (except that it be appropriate for display) or who may participate, making it an example of how the visual arts can allow the public to share their message(s).

Additionally, throughout the duration of the five-week exhibit, the general public purchased numbers (one for each canvas) through a lottery system for $25 each. At the conclusion of the exhibit, each original artwork with the appropriate corresponding number was packaged and sent off to patrons.

The Hardy has garnered great success with the project's first two years, completely selling out of canvases and bringing in a number record of visitors.

The Hardy Celebrates: A Century of Inspiration

The Hardy Gallery unveiled the newest addition to the Peninsula State Park's year long centennial celebration with an member exhibition featuring artwork inspired by Wisconsin's state treasure. Conveniently located across the water's of Eagle Harbor, the historic Hardy Gallery, housed in the simple wooden warehouse on Anderson dock and recognized by its boat name graffiti, provided the ideal backdrop to take in breathtaking views of the park as seen through the eyes of an artist.

Cultural landscapes, such as Door County farms, through their form, features, and the ways they are used, reveal much about our evolving relationships with the natural world. They provide scenic, economic and ecological, opportunities that help persons and communities understand themselves. This exhibition took viewers on an engaging and thought-provoking visual journey to explore Door County's cultural landscapes through the eyes of photographer Paul Lurie. Lurie's stunning large-scale photographs clearly depict aspects of rural Door County often missed by passersby.

This exhibit drew special attention to the dynamic, elusive and infectious creative process used in art making. The Common Ground art project was a collaboration of artists, writers, musicians and scientists focusing on the interplay of natural beauty and environmental issues in the Door Peninsula. This innovative exhibit sought "Common Ground" by involving the community and encouraging cooperation among artists, scientists, businesses, and the area's residents and visitors. The Hardy viewed this exhibit as a ground breaking way to initiate dialogue, encouraging people to draw their own conclusions from the art and scientific information presented.
